Reservoir Aeration Systems

Reliable destratification and water-quality improvement for UK reservoirs

Thermal stratification, low dissolved oxygen (DO), taste and odour issues, and seasonal algal blooms can all compromise reservoir performance—driving up treatment costs and stressing aquatic life. Heathland Fountains & Aerators designs, supplies, installs and maintains reservoir aeration systems that actively mix water columns, raise DO, and stabilise temperature profiles to create clearer, healthier, easier-to-treat water.

Why aerate a reservoir?

Solutions we provide

Diffused (fine-bubble) aeration

Shore-mounted compressors deliver air via weighted airline to membrane diffusers placed at depth. Rising plumes entrain and circulate large volumes of water, destratifying efficiently with minimal visual impact—ideal for medium and deep reservoirs.

Best for: Deeper basins, raw water storage, potable reservoirs where aesthetics and energy efficiency matter.

Surface aerators

High-intensity oxygen transfer and targeted circulation for shallow zones, inlets, coves and around intake towers. Useful as standalone units in shallow water or as a complement to diffused systems.

Best for: Shallow shelves, problem hotspots, rapid DO uplift.

Solar powered diffused aeration system

For remote sites or sustainability goals, we offer solar-powered aeration packages with battery storage and smart controls.

Our end-to-end approach

  1. Site survey & data review – depths, bathymetry, historic water quality, power availability, access.
  2. Design & modelling – diffuser layout, airflow and line sizing, surface vs. diffused strategy, cable/pipe routing.
  3. Proposal & ROI – clear objectives, expected outcomes, running costs and maintenance plan.
  4. Installation & commissioning – CDM-aware method statements, safe deployment from bank or vessel, verification testing.
  5. Maintenance & support – scheduled servicing, spare kits and seasonal advice and optimisation.

Typical reservoir applications

What to expect

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will aeration stir up sediment?
A: Destratification lifts and circulates water but is designed to avoid aggressive resuspension. Correct diffuser placement and airflow keep circulation efficient while protecting clarity.

Q: How quickly will we see results?
A: Thermal mixing is often measurable within days to weeks. Algae and odour reductions typically track seasonal cycles and loading; we’ll set realistic targets in your plan.

Q: Is it safe for fish?
A: Yes. Properly designed systems improve DO and habitat quality. We stage-up commissioning to avoid rapid changes.

Q: Do we need surface aerators if we have diffused aeration?
A: Not always. Hybrid systems are helpful for shallow coves, inlets or around intake towers. We’ll recommend the most efficient mix.

Q: What about winter operation?
A: Most reservoirs benefit from year-round low-rate mixing to prevent deep hypoxia. We can program seasonal modes to save energy.

Q: How noisy are compressors?
A: Modern, acoustically-treated cabinets keep levels very low. We also consider placement and isolation to meet site criteria.

Q: What power do we need?
A: From solar through to three-phase shore power, we’ll size the system to your site and provide clear running-cost estimates.
